Project: Youth Expedition leadership 2005-2009
Description:A charity that organises and delivers young peoples' expeditions is not the obvious hang out for a designer. Since 2004 I have allocated a percentage of my time to this charity, as an expedition member, then organiser and leader, a graphic designer, an editor, a leader-support buddy and a committee member.
Social interaction is a core inspiration for my work. Surrounding oneself with diverse networks, in new situations enables better understanding of the relationships between humans and the world we inhabit.
Young people’s expeditions are a rollercoaster of emotion from anticipation, pride, grief, delight, and determination to empathy or even loathing. Experiencing a wealth of group dynamics and aproaches has over time developed my understanding and interest in how people interact when pressure and conflict arise.
The nature of expeditions provides unpredictable experiences, the classification of these experiences as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ often lies on the context within which they are framed. Brathay has provided an undercurrent for the observation of behaviour and for a lateral application of design. Not to mention life changing adventure, laughing and friendships.
