CV

_______HELLO THERE, _______
my name is Emma Rose Metcalfe, ‘erm’ to many and just ‘m’ to a few. As a designer I seek avenues where design doesn’t always fit so neatly. I like to imagine the role of the designer as both the glucose tablet and the pacemaker in our long ol' race to the future.

I have an inherent fondness for play, perhaps linked to growing up in a toyshop. Through some brilliant jobs I've cemented my idealistic belief in doing good and I am now gathering new knowledge to spark the connections that could make our daily lives and the places we live, a little bit better. I'll try to keep this up to date, but you've got even an inkling of interest in what you think I do, just give me a call.

________I'VE WORKED AT / ON / FOR,________
Sidekick Studios, London April – September 2010
Working as a service designer, ethnographic researcher and embedded journalist, I balanced corporate clients and social innovation with cups of tea and the blogosphere as second nature. Using a co-design approach we worked intimately with a spectrum of designers and developers, funding bodies, healthcare professionals and hard to reach long term mental health patients. I tore myself away from Sidekick only to begin my MFA. Oh, I learnt a thing or two about post-its too.
 Adil Abrar: Director, adil@sidekickstudios.net
 Eco3, Leicester September 2009 - April 2010
Environmental design consultant and researcher. Carbon Resource Efficient Design project. Problem finding, analysis and solutions. I sought low carbon solutions for products, packaging and processes, researching materials and processes, which ironically involved a lot of driving to client meetings.
Mark Shayler: Director, mark@eco3.co.uk
Do Lectures, Wales April - September 2009
A dynamic organization changing the way that schools, communities, business and government think, work and play. My roles included in no particular order; writing copy, communication design, project initiation, workshop design and facilitation and event organization. I worked closely with sustainability experts and got pretty good at chatting to strangers but the surfing still has some way to go.
Andy Middleton: Co-Founder, andy.m@tyf.com
Researcher. Involved identifying current and future c
reative trends for short course education and phoning a lot of people.
Little Tikes Europe 2008
Experience generating toys that could be more responsive to the player and their environment
IKEA and CSM 2007
A three month client project with IKEA whilst at Central Saint Martins. An enlightening journey from conception to product and insight to the time-frames of mass-production and global trend movements.
Sue Pryke: Designer, Ikea
Studio assistant to ceramic designer, everything from mixing clay and glazing to exhibition design and pubic liaison. I learned to be adaptable, like BBC radio 4 and the importance of working sociably.
Jane Cox: Designer, jane@janecoxceramics.co.uk
Expedition Leader, Committee member and reluctant editor of the charity's magazine. I developed my ability to plan long term schedules, calculate risk, manage budgets and think clearly in stressful situations. Grew good shoulders for crying on, learned to communicate without language and experienced incredibly friendly strangers. Expeditions to date include, South America, East Africa, North Africa and Scandinavia.
