Enriched Cultures

Project: Enriched Cultures. June 08
Description: Advanced ceramic technology helps us go into space, build invisible architectural skins and save lives everyday in bulletproof combat clothing all from earth and a fire. So it’s magical - yes, but in public conscience it rarely surpasses plates and mugs.
Material technology is clever and mystifying, clay is sensitive and complex. Enriched Cultures connects people with tangible material properties, sharing ancient knowledge and understanding through functional objects.

By the natural movement and evaporation of water the inside stays up to 10 degrees cooler than room temperature. Learning from the poorest countries these pieces question and offer alternatives to the dilemmas of convenience, sustainability and dependence facing the wealthiest. Design emphasizes basic hand manufacture, encouraging production in the UK’s declining industrial areas currently dependent on economic state support.

1000 'How to' postcards distributed to Londoners.
Exploring material and cultural knowledge I...explored cross cultural developments x puzzled materials researchers x sought external mentors x loved designing with ceramics x followed many paths to find the way x put social above financial x kept salad cool in the hot studio x used design thinking to approach manufacture x  pondered whether innovation is bound to necessity.
