The Do Bursary

Project: The Do Lectures Bursary April-September 09
Description: A dynamic course for people who are going to change the way that schools, communities, business and government think, work and play. That's what they said!
The path to living with strangers in a caravan in Westerly Wales, was short. I Stumble on the Do Bursary info, watch a Do Lecture, phone someone called Andy to talk about design, write a persuasive letter for the bursary, wave goodbye to my London life, drive 6 hours west, lose phone reception, have a long chat with Ian the farmer, unpack.
“We do things differently at Do”. The course is actually a handful of inspired and incredibly talented people with some great ideas. There is a tutor too, “he’ll teach you want you want to know.” “Welcome to Do, you are Do!” And they weren't wrong. There was no clear outline, no boundaries and a rather grey spiderweb of hierarchy.

Skill Shares
If you invite people to share skills, offer them good food, play and a window into your world, you’ll lean how they tick. Over 6 months we organized and participated in 5 residential skill exchanges. Collaboration with Emma-Louise Hardman and Andy MiddletonSkill share w/ Otesha Project

Some of the most successful shares came between the most disparate disciplines. Notable shares included Rob Poynton an improvisation specialist and Embercombe College a social enterprise and centre for learning. With architect Anna Maria Orru and designer, Leonora Oppenhiem we focused on the experiential development of a new centre for sustainable education in Wales.

Community Connect
Engaging whole communities to identify and solve issues that affect them, by providing them with a toolbox of effective methods. We developed the notion of Do Connect, over the 6 months we facilitated 11 bespoke Connect events in Wales.
Design thinking, improvisation and adventure activity helped communities, business associates and local government develop real time action plans to move towards a sustainable future. Collaboration with Emma-Louise Hardman, Andy Middleton and Usha Ladwa-Thomas

Countdown to Copenhagen. 300 young people were energised in workshops designed for fun, free-thinking and ‘do’ing. Using back-casting ideas and timeline planning every workshop left with a tangible plan to start making change within their own circle of influence, often starting with meeting their MP. Collaboration with Welsh Assembly Government, Adam Gent and Emma-Louise Hardman

The Do Lectures 2009. Ideas + Energy = Change. 21 incredible speakers, 80 inspirational attendees, 4 days, 3 nights shared with the world through the internet. Inspiring people to 'do' more. As part of the Do Bursary we spent much of our time on the lectures themseles. Working with the then Do team, David and Clare Hieatt, Andy Middleton, Claire Margetts, Ben Bowen, James Lynch, Jon Heslop and Anna Felton.

During my Do Bursary I learnt...to judge people by what they do x that cooperation and collaboration are not the same x environmentalists usually miss the point x that time is the most precious thing we can design x do one thing, do it well x organising is not difficult, it just takes time x people will help you x to write copy x to talk to business – they’ve got the money x to liaise with government, they have power (and money)x community will steer and help you x that sponsers aren’t always right x that things look different from the inside x design is the most confusing word in English language.
